Gaslight Night

Wearing jeans and a light blue T-shirt, Nancy sat on the Larsens’ veranda, letting the morning sun dry her hair. She’d just gone for a run and showered. And ever since she’d woken up, she’d been turning the case over and over in her mind.

Yesterday, after returning from Vaughn’s, she and Bess and George had joined Maggie for a lazy afternoon swim at Angel Lake. Though Nancy had asked her about the other people in town determined to stop Dana, Maggie had not been able to give her any solid leads. When Nancy called Dana later that day, she learned that nothing new had happened at the refuge.

“Maggie’s got fresh-baked muffins in the kitchen,” Bess announced. She sailed out the porch door, a fat cranberry muffin in one hand. “You know,” she said, sitting down next to Nancy, “I think I could get used to this spa life.”

George followed her, smiling. “You do seem to be adapting pretty well.” She gave Nancy a concerned look. “Still thinking about the case?”

“I can’t help feeling there’s something I’m missing,” Nancy admitted. “I know Lucas has a solid reason to go after Dana, and that he threatened her. But somehow I don’t think he’s the one who’s responsible for the sabotage. And he wasn’t the person who ran us off the road.”

“How about those men yesterday?” Bess asked.

Nancy shrugged. “It sounded like they wanted to do something, but they hadn’t actually gotten around to it yet.”

“Then we’re back to Jesse,” George said.

“Except that Jesse doesn’t have a good motive,” Nancy pointed out. “Besides, that envelope was addressed to him. For all we know, he’s the one being threatened, not Dana.”

Bess giggled and offered Nancy a piece of her muffin. “Blame it on Phineas Josiah Armbruster.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” Nancy said slowly.

George raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Blaming a ghost?”

“Not exactly,” Nancy said. “But I’m going to ask Cal if there have been any more sightings at the Midnight Mine. I also want to ask him if he’s gotten any reports on a blue pickup. Maybe the sabotage at Paws was committed by someone we don’t know about at all. Sort of a phantom suspect.”

The door to the porch swung open, and Maggie stepped onto the veranda. She was carrying a vase filled with delicate ivory-colored orchids. She set it on a small wicker end table. “When I married Cal, he promised me that even if we didn’t always have food on the table, I would have fresh flowers every day. That man keeps his promises. He sent so many of these today, I have enough for four vases.”

“What a romantic,” Bess sighed.

“And a spendthrift,” Maggie said with a laugh. “But speaking of romantic, what have you three done to get ready for Gaslight Night? It’s only hours away.”

Earlier that week Maggie had explained that once a year Seven Rocks celebrated Gaslight Night, a return to the Victorian era, which was when the main part of the town had been built. The streets
